Mountains and Hills

Mountains fascinate me ever since I was a child. Going on a hike for a day is still a favorite weekend activity for my wife and me.

During my schooldays, every year my family discussed on where where to go for the next summer vacation. I always opted for a mountain destination. Back in the day, we used to live in Cologne which meant a 6-hours drive to the nearest serious mountains – the Austrian-Bavarian Alps. By moving to Munich I was able to cut this down to 1–2 hours.

The best time for taking pictures is during winter season. Snow-capped peaks make for impressive sights, temperatures below the freezing point help with clear views. On hazy summer days you can only try to mitigate the visibility problem by starting extremely early in the morning – which in many cases will require staying overnight at a mountain hut.
